i choose Ernie Davis for my NHD project because i am interested in the idea of the first black Heisman Trophy Award winner in 1961. This person is important to history because he was the first African American athlete to be awarded the Heisman Trophy award as the best player in college football. Ernie davis was named by the Scholastic Coach Magazine as an All-American selection. He left behind a legacy of inspiration and gratitude.

Service Learning 5/9

At last weeks meeting we began to watch a video documentary on Darfur. We reflected on how our progress was going on the assignments we were given. We learned alot about Darfur. Every week we learn more information about the devastation in Darfur. I learned how much people here in the United States should be grateful for the things they have and how safe they are compared to how the people in Darfur are living.

Reflection on Service Learning 4/17

At our last meeting our group leaders introduced to us a new idea for service learning. They told us about the genocide in Darfur. After hearing about the genocide it was evident that everyone wanted to help the people in Darfur after taking a vote. I believe its a good idea but the question everyone was left with was how much of what we do is actually going to help the problem in Darfur. The part I would like to play in my group would be the recorder.

Service Learning (africa project)

At our service learning meeting we accomplished what our goal was; better education. In our group we started to brainstorm on our strategies on how to collect money for our project. We chose to do "adopt-a-classroom" for a classroom in Africa. For our next service learning meeting for our group I believe we should finish brainstorming and settle on a good strategy for our collection of money. The ideas we started thinking about our very good.

Service Learning 2008

This year for service learning as my independent service i would like to do a walk for a charity. I would also like to volunteer at the hospital. Also I can volunteer at an after school program to work with younger children. During the summer I can volunteer at an enrichment program. With the school I think a school wide recycling program for plastic and aluminum. The school can have a food drive where we collect can foods and then send them to homeless shelters, and nursing homes. The school can also make breakfast bags which you bring in backaged breakfast food (edible for elderly people) and put them in a bag and send them to a nursing home.

Reflection on NHD

My NHD topic was "Sheltering Fever Orphans".In my group there were three people.NHD was a good experience. I have a complete understanding of what a Primary and Secondary Source is and how to create a annotated bibliography. It's nice to know that I've learned something that some people don't do until their first year in college. I've also learned that its not always the best thing to work with your friends on a big project such as NHD. The hardest thing to do for NHD was finding a large variety of primary sources. The Mother Bethel Church was a big help with providing us with one valuable source: the rent book. NHD wasn't as hard as people made it seem to be. One thing I think that should be changed is that we should start the NHD project much earlier since we spend so much time finding research. With more time we can split the process half and half : we can find sources for the first half and the second half we can start conducting our project. One bad thing about the project was we had restrictions on our topic: our topic had to have some connection to Philadelphia. It would have been better if we could choose anything we wanted. NHD isn't something I would want to repeat doing every year.

Controversy in Huck Finn

The word "nigger"? How would you feel if someone called you something other than your name and purposely tried to demeanor you? You'd probably feel anger and rage. But why is it that young people these days call each other "nigga" purposely? I have several reasons of my belief on the "nigga" and "nigger" controversy. My reasons are that people fought not to be called that, they were labeled with a harsh name, but still in the black community the word is used fluently towards one another.

People fought for years to not be called "nigger". Martin Luther King Jr. and others fought to be treated with respect and not be called a "nigger".The word is disrespectful , it shows ignorance and lack of respect for other races. Discriminating because of skin. I'd be angry if someone referred to me as a "big nigger" like when they called Jim "Mrs.Watson's big nigger Jim" in Huck Finn.

White people hated African Americans. They thought we were ignorant so they gave us a brutal name and enslaved us. White people wanted to make us slaves because we looked different and they thought that gave them the right to call us "niggers". I guess it made them feel superior over us. Wouldn't you think that the white people were the ignorant ones, hating us because of the color of our shin, then giving us a brutal label.

In my community today African Americans call one another "nigga". For them to address each other shows their lack of respect for them self.I don't understand why they think they can call someone of the same race as them a nigger it wont matter, but if a white person came up to them and called the a"nigger" they're ready to fight. If they don't want someone to disrespect them for calling them a "nigger" they mine as well stop saying the word period.

The word "nigger" is not apart of my vocabulary. I believe it should be deleted from every ones. With all the history behind this 6 letter word people still continue to use it.What did people fight for? What did white people call us a nigger? If only they knew that sooner or later we acted like the word didn't bother us and called each other "nigger".It seems this one word issue isn't settled and I'm not sure it ever will be.
